"They're far behind, whether it's the U.S. or Germany," he said. "They don't even look like they belong to this era."
China now manufactures and sells (including in overseas markets) most of the world's electric vehicles. Its expertise in electric vehicles spans the entire value chain: it makes the electric motors for almost all electric vehicles and refines most of the chemicals used in lithium-ion batteries. China is even leading the way in developing sodium batteries, which promise to be the next-generation technology. Last year, more than 80% of the electric vehicles sold in China were produced by domestic automakers. Last fall, they sold more gasoline and electric vehicles per month than multinational automakers.
