China now manufactures and sells (including in overseas markets) most of the world's electric vehicles. Its expertise in electric vehicles spans the entire value chain: it makes the electric motors for almost all electric vehicles and refines most of the chemicals used in lithium-ion batteries. China is even leading the way in developing sodium batteries, which promise to be the next-generation technology.
Last year, more than 80% of the electric vehicles sold in China were produced by domestic automakers. Last fall, they sold more gasoline and electric vehicles per month than multinational automakers.
